My mum always told me I should write about what I know … Yes, well, you are thinking, that narrows the field. Like the joke about take me to your superior, could you be a little more specific. But the other month, considering the conundrum that each day seems to be, I stumbled upon this cartoon and it spoke to me in many ways.
My dad was a huge fan of George Booth, and the New Yorker was always to be found at the cottage, usually in the outhouse. Too young, thank somebody, to read the articles, I ate up the advertisements, poems and cartoons.
An advertisement for a mini pool with a current so you could swim against it, pictured in a living-room room full of plants with a little bridge, reminds me to this day that rich people actually have nicer stuff. A hideous poem about roasting a human with the line, “an olive in every orifice”, has stayed with me forever, reminding me to beware of poetry and possibly the New Yorker. And not to leave terrifying things in an outhouse that is really a long way from a very isolated cottage. Unless they are guides to venomous local snakes.
But the cartoons were worth all the scars, with this ageless classic by Chas Addams fresh to this day:
Apparently George Booth published his first cartoon in the New Yorker in 1969, in June, when I would have been six, so I guess I grew up with his cats and dogs, and a single lightbulb with the iron plugged into the same socket. And my life is much more like a George Booth cartoon, than a New Yorker advertisement, it must be said.
But every day is a day to be a phoenix, and I hope you manage to enjoy yours, despite the ashes.
hi all. thank you as always Xty. wonder if my tune machine is working tonight…i’ll try.
had 3 of these over the years, Bud(female), Pete(well, he wanted to fight and chase the ladies) Echo (male) needed a Walkabout in Australia. one of the most loving and loyal creations that i ave ever met….cats are cool too.
Eric, can you lend me some firewood? tried to play this earlier..not really sure what happened.
mostly for my friend Woodpecker in the kindness of ways, 😯 😕 😎 😆 🙄 💡 ➡
couldn’t find a certain cartoon, then couldn’t find a song, both were on topic. so i’m just going to wing it.
stress test. and something random. ….
There was a topic? Dang!
Xty – how about a fireplace widget?
edit: we don’t really need the song of the day.
edit: am making a motion to replace the song du jour with a crackling fire.
last edit: rolling it to ya.
This is my breed. Renowned as hunting dogs, they have many other skills as well. Bucker used to grab sticks of butter right off the counter, until we started putting them up higher.
EO, i dunno, little bit of old stuff for ya, and please check the dates on those cans in the shelter.
Gold Market Update: “still looks like crap”
eom
for the gal that runs the place.
The canned hams are good until August, 2015. The canned salmon until June, 2016. Canned bacon is undated, which means it lasts until the end of days, or until silver hits $50, whichever comes first. 🙄
Crap, I always forget to resize.
Special breed of dog up north. Canadian Flying Beer Hound.
strange
need more info. msds sheets and all that. yep.
I have had three dogs, Bucky (male), Wolf (male), Mouse (female and the greatest dog ever, but I am sure 😉 that gender has nothing to do with being more social and less aggressive).
Bucky ate everything off the counter, and once slowly licked an entire pound of butter to death in the back of the car on a ride to the cottage. We tried to booby trap a piece of pizza once with banana peppers, etc., and she ate it so fast she didn’t notice. She was my best friend, despite her evil ways.
I kind of like my song of the day, but I did look for a fireplace and didn’t find one. You can just ignore the song – maybe I can find a more attractive music player for you to ignore – I am not to happy with the single button. It does not seem possible to make a way for other people to play songs from the web, even for me really, other than through the comments. I can only make kludgy music players that play mp3 files from my computer. But I am beginning to understand html which is cool.
I did notice and enjoy the one from Rocky Horror a couple of days ago. Seems it could be a theme song for the blog as a whole. Lighthouses…”There’s a light”…I get it…and it is good. ❗
Now heading off to be “First” on the new post…
i don’t really have a problem with the song of the day. i was just being goofy.
I am just proud to have made the widget work. But I think the song from Rocky Horror should be this site’s theme song – the lyrics seemed extra relevant when I was listening to it. I really did look for a fireplace widget, and will look again. Or/and an aquarium.
i might as well post it since my own curiosity got the best of me, and save any other intrigued readers the trouble. i did remembered the song Time Warp, but not this one.
i do have a 72 gallon aquarium that i could fix a camera too, and link it up to my home WIFI! 😀
