Word of the Day
Now initially you might think you don't need or even want to know aboutbutyrate (ˈbjuːtɪˌreɪt) noun,
any salt or ester of butyric acid, containing the monovalent group C3H7COO- or ion C3H7COO–, and when you then bumped into this, having first found out it is in butter, you might well panic:
Examples of butyrate in a Sentence
Recent Examples on the WebClear plastic screwdriver handles are usually made from cellulose acetate butyrate, a material developed in the 1930s.
— Roy Berendsohn, Popular Mechanics, "Why Do My Old Plastic Screwdriver Handles Stink?," 8 Oct. 2017But then you would realize that lately it has had a great rise in reputation and helps maintain your biodome and aids in the production of key neurotransmitters that help both our gut and our brains to work. Apparently we make it when bacteria in our bellies ferment high fibre carbohydrates, but it is also, and here is the punchline, found in butter! The highest food source for it. I am relieved, and think I will just butter up everything!
At least these verbose scientist think so:
The neuropharmacology of butyrate: The bread and butter of the microbiota-gut-brain axis?

Popcorn Update: 6/28/2014
Since the last post, I’ve:
1) Put up the bunny fence.
2) Transplanted a few sprouts into some empty spaces. That works fine before they get more than about 3 inches tall. Move them with a scoop of soil intact around the roots.
3) Thinned out some sprouts from where plants were too close together.
A big emphasis for me this year is to not have plants too close together. I’ve been very guilty of this in the past, and the result has been weak thin stalks and big losses to blow down. I’m hoping for better on that front this year.
The bunny fence could probably come down any day now. Not much to do after that for a couple of months. A little weeding, a little watering, that’s about it. I’ll watch the depth of the green color. If it’s too pale, I need to add nitrogen. I usually use blood meal.
Been a busy day. Daughters grad party is tomorrow. Put together three pans of lasagna this morning and grilled three dozen brats this afternoon. Tomorrow the brats go in a slow cooker with beer and onions.
Just took off the last brats. Methinks it’s time for (another) cold one and put the feet up a while.
I trust they’re not Johnsonville.
Nope. Went with Usinger’s. They came out excellent. Indirect heat, on the Weber, cover on. Seems a shame to mess them up with beer and onions, but that makes for an easy way to buffet style them all day for a crowd. I may keep a secret stash of plain ones microwave ready just for moi.
Popcorn #4, 6/30/14
Heavy storms last night pretty much flattened the crop! I don’t ever remember having this kind of damage on young supple little plants. I’m pretty sure I can go in and straighten up most of them though. I bet I can save 90%. More heavy storms forecast for this afternoon, and then maybe a break for a while.
In other news, a big chunk of a neighbor’s tree is in my yard.
Good thing you haven’t been watering! But they do look salvageable. Corn is pretty sturdy so I can only imagine. We got hammered, but now I am thinking it wasn’t so bad. Although I am mighty enamoured of our sump pump.
At least the tree is in your yard …
