Optimism, resiliency and anti-fragility

Mikey and I were discussing life this morning, as we often do, and analysing recent events in our lives, and I quoted my brother, for the zillionth time, saying that a diamond in a dung heap was still a diamond.  But that wasn’t quite what we had been meaning.  It was more about how, in the simplest terms, a bad thing can turn out to be a great thing, if you approach adversity and change as opportunities.  Sounds easy to say but hard to do, and so it is.  Living a considerable portion of your day in the now, taking each individual minute say, and not using it to groove a past negative but to approach a new positive sounds corny, but it has gotten me through some wicked pain moments.  And then we realised we were experiencing Nassim Taleb’s anti-fragility.  That getting a pounding can make you more robust.  When you add in consciousness, and the ability, in Stephen Covey’s words, to choose how to re-act to something, with the emphasis on ‘choose’ and ‘act’, it becomes quite an interesting quandary.

All that being said, I thought I would put up a link to my favourite Austrian economist, Russ Roberts, and two interviews with Nassim Taleb.  One about anti-fragility, and the other vaguely incomprehensible, on account of enthusiasm and a thick accent, about the importance of skin in the game, but you can’t help but feel smarter after listening.  Like a one hour trip to a Holiday Inn.

More discussion of default scenarios. Sooner or later, the Tea Party is going to find out they never had a hostage after all. And I say this because I’m an optimist!

The hard money crowd will then go ballistic over this usurpation of the power of the purse, and the implied further debasement. And then gold will go…nowhere. 🙁

    And btw, First!

I can now honestly say, I kind of like firsts. But why you guys keep ending up on moderation is beyond me. Searching the web for answers. I might try a login plugin to see if it would work better.

And I also have to add, I hate taking my own advice. I was having a nice wallow in self-pity earlier and caught myself. Strange how it can almost be fun to be a grump.

And I agree – the debt ceiling is all politics, not money.

I have no clue how to fix the moderation issue – will read about it tomorrow. Want to just register you three to at least let you post reliably.

I can’t explain other than to say I just copy the url as it appears at the top of the screen and then paste it into the body of the comment field.

I don’t right click on the youbtube to produce the url, or use any of the provided copy tools – just command c and command v on my mac, and if I remember correctly, control c and control p on a pc.

But that’s it, no magic spell or incantation.

    And good morning.

But now I am off to catch a plane to Newfoundland, and am all in a tizzy. I will try to get online at the airport and maybe post from the Porter lounge! I bet you are really excited about that – the Ottawa airport.

and now the video won’t display at all. Darn nation.

    Oh well. Later.

  12. xty says:

And now the video appears twice! I have done nothing, except now I am sitting in the Porter lounge at the Ottawa airport, watching my gate out the window to see my little plane arrive, which it hasn’t.

Oh, and I forgot to mention I (and don’t tell my marvellous husband) that I got myself a new iPhone 5s after nursing my last iPhone along for four years and ten months. I was after the camera mostly, and was going bonkers trying to get one through our inept Rogers world, which I cannot escape from yet, as they work in Newfoundland and we can chat for free. Although all that might be about to change as the monopolies slowly fall.

So I will be extra photo mad, as I have my big camera and lens too. I think our plane is late.

I sometimes never shut up, and I realise this is a flaw in my character, btw.

  13. xty says:

And the plane has arrived. Bam. Off I go.
